Involvement in C20

F20 is part of the steering group of the G20 Civil Society Engagement Group (C20) Working Group 9 on Philanthropy and Sustainable Development (WG9).

The Working Group is co-chaired by WINGS, GIFE and IIED. The other members of the Working Group 9 Steering Group are Comunalia, Din4mo, OECD  netFWD and Comuá.

The entire working group comprises around 400 organizations in the philanthropic and sustainable development space. Together the members are developing key messages and recommendations for the G20 process, focusing on specific golden threads and joint objectives. These recommendations shall serve as guidelines for direct engagement with actors and stakeholders throughout the year 2024.

As part of its G20 presidency, the Brazilian government has prioritized enhancing the integration of civil society and facilitating the coordination between the Sherpa and Finance tracks. This ensures a strengthened and more cohesive framework for the engagement groups. Additionally, the Brazilian presidency suggests hosting an event for civil society called “G20 Social” coinciding with the G20 Summit on November 18th and 19th, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro.

Civil20 (C20) is an official Engagement Group of G20 that provides a platform for civil society organizations and social movements around the world to voice people’s aspirations to the world leaders in G20.

The Civil 20 (C20) became an official Engagement Group of the G20 in 2013. Since then, it has grown stronger each year, ensuring that world leaders listen to the recommendations and demands of organized civil society. C20 aims to protect the environment, promote social and economic development, uphold human rights, and leave no one behind. As part of the G20 process, C20 plays multiple roles, including providing expertise, holding governments accountable, seeking positive outcomes for society, and advocating for effective financial means and resource allocation. C20 also brings balance by addressing the G20’s weakness in granting civil society the same level of access as business interests. In a world where people often feel governments prioritize businesses over citizens, involving civil society is crucial to ensure government decisions reflect the interests of the people and earn their trust. Undoubtedly, C20 is a significant contributor to the G20 process, as civil society houses innovators and experts in various fields, ready to provide cutting-edge solutions and innovative ideas on key global issues.
