In collaboration with the Insitute for Climate and Society (iCS) and the Climate Emergency Collaboration Group (CECG), F20 co-hosted the COP side event about “The Brazilian G20 Presidency–What’s Philanthropy’s Role?” on December 6th 2023. This gathering convened diverse foundations to discuss how we as a community can best engage with the pressing issues at the nexus of climate change, sustainable development, and social justice. It also stressed the importance of connecting local organizations to global dialogues and practices, amplifying Global South voices in crucial decision-making forums.
Overall, the F20 team and many of its members were highly engaged in advocacy work in Dubai during the COP28. For our new Secretary General, Katrin Harvey, it was a personal highlight to meet so many of the participants and colleagues at various gatherings and to learn from them about their work, their vision, and priorities. Especially meeting F20’s new Chair, Alice Amorim in person for the first time gave her reason to smile. Moreover, F20 participated in panels on sustainable financing and philanthropic collaboration in the Blue Zone.
COP28 succeeded in keeping the 1.5-degree Celsius goal alive – this is one of the many small victories worth celebrating as 2023 comes to an end, and which give us reason for optimism as we all work together in tackling the climate crisis in a way that leaves no one behind.
